The voluntary non-profit sector is long established in New Zealand. It represents a vibrant industry that encompasses every conceivable sphere of human interest and endeavour. The non-profit or ‘third sector’ is estimated to generate 3 billion dollars to the national economy (ASB Business report, 2006). For every $1 donated to the non profit sector it’s estimated that $3 to $5 worth of services are delivered in the community (VAVA, 2004). More importantly, over 1 million New Zealanders are directly involved in the third sector as contributors, workers and/or active supporters.
