THINK FRESH FOR PULP DREAMS
by Martine Rolls
Are you ready to see something different? Inspired by the comic books from the sixties as much as by the world he lives in now, Tauranga artist Bernard Dobbie brings an exhibition to Creative Tauranga like you haven’t seen before.
From a career as a freelance illustrator, Bernard has built up his repertoire of favourite techniques and is now specialising in fluid acrylics, airbrushing, cartooning and computer art. On display at Creative Tauranga from 31 August until September 9th is Bernard’s exhibition of light-hearted paintings which he affectionately calls Pulp Dreams.
Think acrylics on canvas large and small with a tick of airbrushing. Think of art works that are based around local scenery. Then open your mind and picture this: vampires and zombies on a gothic trip to the Mount in the depth of night, a mermaid blast amongst the creatures of the sea. And flying saucers, something that no doubt will go down well with Tauranga’s active UFO society.
Think fresh, and you’ll get a bit of an idea of what can be expected from Bernard Dobbie’s Pulp Dreams.
“The works are life art, but nothing’s too heavy”, says Bernard. “They are cheerful, whimsical paintings. It’s pulp, and all a lot of fun.”
Come and see these unusual art works for yourself at Creative Tauranga and to find out more about this quirky local artist and what inspires him, check out dobbieart.co.nz.
